Catalpa bignonioides 'Purpurea' is an attractive bean tree that makes a statement in a garden with its rich dark-purple foliage. The leaves are heart-shaped and when young, are a lovely deep glossy purple, turning to shades of dark-green and chocolatey-purple as they mature.
For an added wow-factor, the tree produces its foxglove-like flowers at a young age unlike some other varieties which only flower when they are more mature. The creamy white flowers feature purple and orange markings and are followed by long green pendulous seed pods that hang from the branches.
Purple Indian Bean trees have a moderate growth speed and an upright and broad headed habit. They are susceptible to strong winds and are best planted in a sheltered position. Your tree will grow to heights of 6m and spreads of 5m in a 20 year period. If coppiced it will stay even smaller, producing even larger leaves. It will tolerate most soil types but will not do well in wet soils.
If you are looking to add bold colours to your outdoor living space, Catalpa bignonioides 'Purpurea' is the perfect choice. The lovely heart-shaped leaves makes a great ornamental romantic display. Plant near to a front door, around a patio or to create a secluded hide-away next to a picnic bench and umbrella.
