Prunus Avium ‘Summer Sun’ is a hardy, resilient and reliable variety of sweet cherry tree cultivated in the UK. Originally passed over for other breeds the ‘Summer Sun’ cherry tree quickly became a staple of UK cherry trees thanks to its resistance to frost damage during harsher Springs, whereas other varieties may not fare as well. Though not self-fertile, the late-Spring blooming, scented white flowers are hardy and tough ensuring the arrival of the large, glossy, deep red almost black cherries in the Summer.
The cherries hold a refreshing, rich, sweet flavour and firm, crunchy texture perfect for eating fresh off the tree. They are also great when used for canning or preserves.
Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and keep in full or partial sun. can be fan trained or grown free standing. Birds tend to eat the fruit, so some netting is advised.
